Kommetjie Road, Fish Hoek – call to action *petition*

Dear Residents/NGOs/NPOs/Community groups/Churches/Taxi drivers/Business people etc.
Our community has been shocked and shattered once more by the death of another innocent victim on Kommetjie Road in Fish Hoek. Over the years this notoriously dangerous road has been the subject of actions, meetings and letters to the media. Measures have been taken, but tragic accidents are still occurring. We realise that it is driver behaviour and attitude that needs to change. Even so, we are driven to use whatever means we can to make this road safe for motorists, pedestrians and the residents living in its vicinity.
We have a website, we have passion and we have a voice. We have set up a petition calling those who have political and civic clout to do what they can to prevent further human suffering and financial loss through accidents on Kommetjie Road:

We  realise that the issue is complex, that the City’s funds are limited, that there are many urgent projects in dire need of financing, that the traffic department is understaffed and underpaid… so we are calling on you to to do what you can do within your sphere. In the words of Theodore Roosevelt:

“Do what you can with what you have where you are”.

We have a website, we have passion and we have a voice. We have set up a petition calling those who have political and civic clout to do what they can to prevent further human suffering and financial loss through accidents on Kommetjie Road and we ask you to add your voices to ours. Please sign the petition, the link of which is below, and, if you have been involved in an accident or a near-miss/hit  on Kommetjie Rd, please note down the details as we wish to give as much evidence to the authorities as we can of the severity of the problem. The signing will take less than a minute of your time, but in the long run could add years to the life of someone else.

Please send it on to all in your network of friends and contacts. Twitter it, Facebook it – get it out there! For those not on the internet, letters of support or petition, of constructive ideas re resolving the problem and of information regarding accidents can be dropped into the postboxes at Fish Hoek Veterinary Clinic on Kommetjie Rd or at 93 Kommetjie Rd.

  1. My husband was picking up my grand daughter at about 18.00 on a dusky evening , at the bend , where the road goes into Silverglades. He saw nothing, did a turn to come back to Fish Hoek and did not see a little car, going fast with apparantly faulty brakes , slam in to him. It was my husband’s fault but there was no warning hooter and no lights from the other vehicle. This was a year ago. The Lady that my grand daughter was seeing, had nearly written off a cyclist at that bend a few weeks earlier. She just did not see him. Fortunately, our Hardbody took the impact, a near write off but Graham and Kate survived and the three occupants from Oceanview in the other car, had minor and one serious injury. It could have been so much worse. .

  2. I wish to sign the petition and do hope that something can be done to stop the dreadful statistics of this busy stretch of road
